Extraordinarily Mobile Pods
Extraordinarily Mobile Pods builds on work created in the American Nomads Project. One of the design concerns of American Nomads centered on the struggles of traveling solo versus migrating communally, and a series of functional pieces addressed these issues of life in transit (tested in 2010 during hikes and camping trips in the Vermont wilderness.) The Extraordinarily Mobile Pods create four stable, transportable living units whose purpose promotes mobility for the living/sleeping quarters of travelers. The design of the Extraordinarily Mobile Pods shares components with the pieces field-tested in the American Nomads Project, but the design of the Extraordinarily Mobile Pods delves deeper into the inherent limitations of lone travel.
These pods have easy connections from one to another; they have more communally shared spaces and a better distribution of weight load per traveler, thus promoting the benefits of a group trek. Or do they? One of the most significant elements of Bunny Sandwich work is the manipulation of the viewer’s perception of survivalist objects towards the absurd or the unexpected, and Extraordinarily Mobile Pods are no different. Bunny Sandwich work encourages user interaction as viewers’ naturally intuit why our objects will or will not work in a real world setting. In the instance of Extraordinarily Mobile Pods, we are excited at the prospect that participants could literally live in the pods for limited periods of time as Art Squatters. We encourage the full use of them for hikes and overnights by teams of campers.
